A study of the performance of the new generation of N95 filtering facepiece respirators in healthcare workers

Abstract

Background

The use of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) is critical for healthcare workers (HCWs) to protect against airborne infectious diseases. However, there is limited data on the performance of the new generation of N95 FFRs in healthcare settings. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the new generation of N95 FFRs in terms of fit, comfort, and breathability in HCWs.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted among HCWs in a tertiary hospital in Malaysia. Participants were fitted with the new generation of N95 FFRs and underwent a series of tests to assess fit, comfort, and breathability. The fit test was conducted using the qualitative fit test method, while the comfort and breathability tests were assessed using a 10-point Likert scale.

Results

A total of 100 HCWs participated in the study. The majority of the participants (96%) passed the fit test. The mean comfort score was 7.4 ± 1.5, and the mean breathability score was 7.2 ± 1.6. There were no significant differences in fit, comfort, or breathability scores between different types of N95 FFRs.

Conclusion

The new generation of N95 FFRs provides good fit, comfort, and breathability in HCWs. These findings suggest that the new generation of N95 FFRs can be used effectively to protect HCWs from airborne infectious diseases.

Introduction

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at high risk of exposure to airborne infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, influenza, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) are personal protective equipment (PPE) that are used to protect HCWs from airborne infectious diseases. N95 FFRs are designed to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles, including viruses and bacteria.

The use of N95 FFRs has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of infection in HCWs. A study conducted during the SARS outbreak in 2003 found that HCWs who wore N95 FFRs had a significantly lower risk of infection than those who did not wear N95 FFRs [1]. Another study conducted during the influenza pandemic in 2009 found that HCWs who wore N95 FFRs had a significantly lower risk of infection than those who did not wear N95 FFRs [2].
